About the Workshop:

Over the past decade, increased attention has been devoted to the importance of integrating racial/ethnic/cultural issues into the career counseling process. Particular focus has been placed on the cultural relevance of vocational theories, the use of various assessments and interventions with diverse populations, and the importance of reaching out to under-served populations.

While the number of career centers, individual practitioners, and other service providers have grown, the utilization of career services by women and minorities have not kept pace. Cultural barriers encountered by diverse groups still exist, partly due to the racial and ethnic differences between counselor and client.

To more effectively engage under-served populations and expand our career practices, it is imperative that we understand the relevance and role of our own cultural identity. By understanding ourselves more fully and completely, career practitioners will be able to provide more respectful and inclusive services to all clients.

During this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to expand on their graduate training and more effectively examine important variables in their own practice which may influence the success of their interventions. During the latter half of this workshop, experiential exercises will be used to help us learn about our own identity and how that can enhance our professional work.

Learning Objectives:
1) Discuss how individual and collective cultures impact career service provision.
2) Recognize the importance of creating a multiculturally-inclusive counseling environment.
3) Critically assess one's own cultural identity and its potential influence in the career counseling process.
4) Assess your own practice in promoting respectful cross-cultural interactions.
